Wi-Fi 7, over four times faster, opens the door to commercialization in Korea
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it has
completed the reallocation of frequencies for fixed and mobile broadcasting
relays in the 6 GHz band for the commercialization of Wi-Fi 6E, and it is also
pushing for institutional improvements for the introduction of Wi-Fi 7.
Wi-Fi 7, which utilizes the same spectrum as Wi-Fi 6E
and other previous standards, is known for potentially offering speeds up to
4.8 times faster than Wi-Fi 6/6E due to its doubled channel bandwidth compared
to Wi-Fi 6E, improved modulation and streaming methods, and the introduction of
MLO. Accordingly, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to revise the technical
standards (notification) to expand the bandwidth per channel from the current
160 MHz to 320 MHz to align with the Wi-Fi 7 standard by the first half of this
year.
Through this regulatory improvement, the commercialization of chipsets, smartphones, and other devices equipped with Wi-Fi 7 will not only enable citizens to enjoy high-quality Wi-Fi services in public institutions and daily life but also expand the application range of Wi-Fi beyond conventional areas like smartphones or laptops to various domains such as extended reality (XR) and industrial robots.
