Announcement of Korea's National Standard for AI Management Systems
Korea is set to establish a National Standard (KS) for AI Management Systems to support companies developing and utilizing AI (Artificial Intelligence) products and services. This initiative aims to foster responsible AI development and facilitate compliance with international standards, ensuring companies remain competitive globally.
What is the AI Management System KS?
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to adopt ISO/IEC 42001, an international standard for AI Management Systems jointly published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in December last year. This will become Korea's official AI Management System KS.
Key Features of the KS Draft
The KS draft incorporates various requirements based on the international standard to help companies providing or utilizing AI products or services:
- Planning: Establishing a framework for effective AI system management.
- Risk Management and Assessment: Addressing potential risks and ensuring robust AI system performance.
- Data Management: Ensuring proper handling, storage, and transparency of data.
- Transparency: Promoting responsible AI practices and clear communication of processes.
Benefits of Applying the Standard
- Responsible AI Development: Companies can implement safe and ethical AI systems.
- Global Compliance: Helps businesses meet international AI regulations, including those in Europe and the United States.
- Overseas Market Entry: Facilitates easier expansion into foreign markets by addressing regulatory requirements.
Timeline for Implementation
The KS draft will go through a two-month feedback collection process and a Technical Committee review, with finalization expected in the first half of 2025.
