Korea to Introduce Automotive Battery Safety Certification and Tracking Management Systems
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) is planning to introduce battery safety certification and tracking management systems for automotive batteries starting February next year. Ahead of the implementation, MOLIT is issuing a legislative notice for public feedback on the proposed amendments to subordinate regulations. The notice period will run for 42 days, from November 11 to December 23, 2024.
1. Establishment of Battery Safety Certification Procedures
Application Process:
Applicants must submit a battery specification sheet detailing the manufacturer, production site, and other relevant information, along with the application form to the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport.Safety Testing:
Battery safety tests will adhere to current self-certification testing standards.Certification and Labeling:
Upon successful certification, MOLIT will issue a safety certification. Manufacturers are required to display the safety certification mark in a visible location on the certified battery.Conformity Inspections:
Even after certification, authorized performance test agencies must conduct conformity inspections annually and submit inspection plans to MOLIT.
2. Regulations on Recording Battery Identification Numbers
Identification Number Format:
The identification number for each battery will consist of up to 24 characters, including the production date.Procedural Requirements:
Manufacturers must include the identification numbers in the vehicle manufacturing certificate and notify the authorities.Multiple Batteries:
For vehicles with two or more batteries, all identification numbers must be recorded in the vehicle registration record.
