Korea Passes Groundbreaking Basic Act on Artificial Intelligence

The Ministry of Science and ICT has announced that the Basic Act on the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and the Establishment of a Trust-Based Framework was approved during the National Assembly's plenary session on December 26. This legislation represents a critical milestone in Korea's efforts to lead the global AI industry while ensuring safety and trust.


What Does the Basic Act Cover?

🔹 National AI Development Plan

Every three years, the Minister of Science and ICT will work with relevant ministries and local governments to develop and implement a National AI Master Plan, aimed at strengthening Korea’s AI competitiveness.

To foster the AI ecosystem, the Act sets a framework for government support in:

  • Research and development (R&D)
  • Establishing standards
  • Creating training data policies
  • Promoting the adoption and utilization of AI technologies

Implementation Timeline

The Basic Act on AI will officially take effect in January 2026, following its approval in the Cabinet meeting and a one-year grace period.
