40 Imported Products Fail to Meet Korean Safety Standards

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, recently announced the results of a comprehensive safety investigation on 190 popular products sold on overseas online platforms. The findings revealed that 40 of these products did not comply with Korean safety standards.

Why Was This Investigation Conducted?

This investigation was initiated in response to growing concerns over the safety of overseas direct purchase (ODP) products. The non-compliance rate was alarmingly high at 21.1%, much higher than the 6.1% average non-compliance rate for products distributed domestically. This highlights the potential risks consumers may face when purchasing products from overseas platforms.

Breakdown of the Non-Compliant Products

Here’s a closer look at the investigation findings:

  • Electrical Products: Out of 66 items inspected, 14 failed to meet safety standards. This includes:

    • 8 DC power supplies
    • 3 LED fixtures
    • 2 plugs and sockets
    • 1 waffle maker
  • Household Products: Among the 30 household items reviewed, 11 were found to be non-compliant, including:

    • 3 portable laser products
    • 2 safety helmets
  • Children's Products: Out of 94 children's products tested, 15 were deemed unsafe, such as:

    • 7 children's textile products
    • 4 toys
    • 1 infant carrier

What Does This Mean for Consumers?

KATS has taken proactive measures by requesting that overseas online platforms block the sale of these non-compliant products. For those who want to know more, the detailed list and related information have been made available on the Product Safety Information Center and Consumer 24.

What’s Next? Future Safety Measures

To further protect consumers, KATS plans to expand its investigation of overseas direct purchase products by conducting a second round of safety inspections in September. This underscores the critical importance of KC certification, a mark that assures products meet Korean safety standards.

What Should Consumers Do?

Consumers are strongly urged to check for KC certification when purchasing products, especially when buying from overseas platforms. By doing so, you can ensure that the products you use comply with Korean safety standards and protect yourself and your loved ones from potential harm.
