KC Safety Standards for E-Scooter Batteries Strengthened, with Overdischarge and Overcurrent Testing Added

Korea has strengthened KC safety standards for e-scooter batteries, adding overdischarge and overcurrent testing requirements.

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) announces plans to revise safety standards for lithium-ion portable batteries (KC 62133-2) used in e-scooters to enhance consumer protection against fire accidents. The safety management level will be upgraded to match that of two-wheeled vehicle batteries. (Announcement No. 2026-112)

Public opinions on this revision will be collected until June 6, 2026.

Key Amendments

Annex 72 of the Safety Standards for Consumer Products Subject to Safety Confirmation (Electric personal mobility) - E-Scooter

Overdischarge tests and overcurrent tests will be newly added in accordance with the two-wheeled vehicle traction battery safety test standards specified in the Detailed Regulations of Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Test reports must be submitted to and issued by an electrical appliance safety confirmation test facility according to these standards. Overcurrent and overdischarge testing are applied only to components and parts such as batteries.
