Audio Equipment KC Certification: Frequently Overlooked e-Standby Requirements in Korea
Recently, cases have been identified where
audio equipment placed on the Korean market complies with KC Product Safety and
EMC/RF requirements, but the mandatory registration under the e-Standby Program
has been overlooked.
• What is the e-Standby Program?
The e-Standby Program is one of Korea's
mandatory energy efficiency programs, designed to promote the reduction of
standby power consumption in electronic products. Manufacturers and importers
of regulated products must test their products in accordance with the
prescribed technical standards and measurement methods and complete the
required registration with the Korea Energy Agency
within 60 days after completion.
• Scope of Application for Audio Equipment
Audio equipment subject to the e-Standby
Program includes household or office electrical products with a rated power
consumption of 1,000 W or less that are designed to record and reproduce audio
signals through devices such as headphones, speakers, or audio signal
converters.
• Main Product Categories Subject to the
e-Standby Program
Cassette decks, CD players/changers, CD
recorders, equalizers, mini-component systems, midi-component systems,
speakers, stereo amplifiers, stereo receivers, and all-in-one audio DVD
systems.
• Excluded Product Categories (Not Subject
to Registration)
Products equipped with batteries and using
low-voltage adapters with a rated output voltage below 6 V that comply with the
Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), USB-charged products, radio
cassette players, wireless headphones, car audio equipment, and products
intended exclusively for broadcasting applications.
• Important Compliance Considerations
If a product subject to the e-Standby
Program is distributed without completing the required registration, it may be
subject to administrative sanctions under the applicable laws and regulations.
In addition, if non-compliance is
identified during market surveillance activities, corrective actions such as
suspension of sales, product recalls, or other remedial measures may be
required, potentially resulting in significant business and compliance risks
for manufacturers and importers.
Before placing audio equipment on the
Korean market, manufacturers and importers should verify not only the
applicable KC Product Safety and EMC/RF requirements, but also whether the
product is subject to the e-Standby Program.
