MOLIT Amends EDR Rules in Line with International Standards

Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) has amended the regulations to align the recording methods and items of Event Data Recorders (EDRs) with international standards and to clarify the conditions under which recorded driving data must not be overwritten.

Under the amendment, EDR data must be preserved if any of the following conditions are met:

  • Deployment of irreversible safety devices such as airbags or seatbelt pre-tensioners
  • Activation of a pedestrian protection system during a collision with a pedestrian or cyclist
  • In vehicles without irreversible safety devices, if the cumulative change in speed in the direction of travel exceeds 25 km/h within 0.15 seconds

In addition, the front passenger airbag status must now be limited to two values: ON or OFF.
